The Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) has partnered with the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force to conduct the Matanuska-Susitna Joint Land Use Study (JLUS). The study explores opportunities to accommodate necessary growth and to maintain the regional economic sustainability associated with Fort Richardson Army Post, Elmendorf Air Force Base and the National Guard and to help ensure operational sustainability.

The goal of the JLUS is to preserve and protect missions and assets and protect public health and safety. To meet this goal, planners identified the following objectives:

1. Promote effective compatible development programs at the local level.
2. Identify options to reduce operational impacts of military installations.
3. Identify options for local government to mitigate potential encroachment.

The goal and objectives may be refined as the study progresses.
