Homer East End Road Rehabilitation |
The goal of this rehabilitation project is to improve the roadway surface and address safety concerns from Kachemak Drive to McNeil Canyon (milepoint 3.75 - 12.2). The project includes adding a separated multi-use pathway, where practical. Safety improvements include increasing the road shoulders and improving sight distance on horizontal and vertical curves (dips & bumps).
The project is being developed in phases due to funding limitations. In 2009 DOT confirmed the funds available for the project, and had to adjust the limits of the next phase. This change was the subject of the April 16, 2009 public meeting. The revised limits of the next phase are from Kachemak Drive (mp 3.75) to Waterman Road (mp 5.16). Work on future phases (mp 5.16-12.2) is on hold. See the latest announcements on the Public Involvement Meeting Summaries page for details.
DOT recently completed a reevaluation of the project's environmental document, which was approved in early 2011. DOT is now proceeding with the right-of-way phase to secure the property rights necessary to construct the project. After the project right-of-way is acquired, the design will be finalized and the project will be advertised for construction. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2014.
